James B. Patterson The alleged father of Charles E. PATTERSON and spouse of Susan E. ASHTON PATTERSON EDDY.
Family legend says he fought in the Civil War, was a prisoner-of-war, and died either in a drowning accident or during a trip to the site of his former captivity to "avenge the wrongs" done to him in the prison camp. His wife married again in 1877 and their only son was born in December 1873, so he disappeared between 1873 and 1877.
His son's US Census records indicate that his father was born in Ohio.
Who was he?

I have searched every US Census from 1830 to 1920 in vain. There are sources that say her married name was ASHTON and others list VOOHEES.
